Artificial hands: on the ambivalence of prostheses in the course of time

Exhibition at UZH atrium

What are prostheses? How has their manufacture and use changed over time? What constitutes a ‘normal’ body?

Students on the Master's degree programme in Educational Sciences at UZH explored these and other questions in the spring semester of 2024. Funded by UZH's open_innovation teaching grant and supported by the IEM's Medical Collection, they used prostheses to examine the cultural history of disability. To this end, they researched object histories and revealed the cultural contexts of the respective objects. The results were presented in an exhibition entitled Artificial hands. On the ambivalence of prostheses in the course of time from 27 September to 10 October in the atrium of the UZH.

On 17 December 2024, the project managers, Dr Michèle Hofmann and Dr Jona Garz, will present the project as part of the IEM seminar series on Campus Irchel from 16:15-17:00 in room Y42 G53.
